Established in the year 1969 by the Government of Sikkim, Temi tea plants are growing along the steep slopes of the hills emerging from the Tendong Hills; ranging from 120o to 1800 m. The 177 hectare spread gardens of Temi produce the premium quality tea leafs having international demand. The way to the processing plant, enroute Tendong Hill, is marked with well-trimmed cherry blossom trees amidst the fields lush with ferns and grazing grasses. Once you reach the garden, the rewarding views of Khangchendzonga tampered in snow mesmerizes the tourists completely and leaves them in the state of awe. Temi Tea Estate is the only tea garden existing in Sikkim producing about 1 Lakh kg of tea every year, that too using the organic method as per the guidelines of the Institute of Marketecology (IMO) of Switzerland.
What To Do And See
Temi Tea Estate is situated in Ravangla; which is quite popular for village tourism. There are many petite villages rearing in this beautiful land such as Narsing Village, Borong Village, Kewzing Village and many other, offering an enriching demonstration of their colorful culture and traditions. The adventure lovers can go for an accomplishing trek to the Tendong Hill and Maenam Hill with a detour to the Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary and Tendong State Biodiversity Park. To witness the curative power of Sulphurous water one must visit the Ralong and Borong Hot Springs situated just 7 km away from each other. Other than these there are many popular tourist destinations located in Pelling which can be easily included in the itinerary along with their visit to the Temi Tea Garden such as the Rimbi Waterfalls, Sewaro Rock Garden, Khecheopalri Lake, Rabdentse Ruins, and Khangchendzonga Waterfalls. For the peace-seekers, there are few famous Buddhist monasteries tucked in the far mountains of Pelling like Sang Da Choeling Monastery and Pemayangtse Monastery and while being in Ravangla one can visit the monasteries such as Ralang Monastery, Bon Monastery and Tashiding Monastery.
Best Time To Visit :
The months of March-May is considered to be the best time to visit Temi Tea Estate. The weather is quite pleasant and the place is ornamented with rich fields of orchids and rhododendrons.
Getting there :
Temi Tea Estate situated at Ravangla, is quite accessible by Bus / Shared Taxis from major towns like Namchi, Pelling or Gangtok. Though Namchi is the nearest town of all, from where one can hire a private taxi to reach Temi.
