How to Reach Sikkim by Road

Sikkim is well connected to Siliguri; a gateway of North-east India by the National Highway 31. It is a 4 hours (145 km) fine drive on the twisty roads, that passes through the dense forest and carpeted hills. Tourists often prefer to travel Sikkim by road enjoying the scenic beauty of the River Teesta on one side and soaring peaks parked along the other side of the road. Apart from Siliguri, Sikkim can also be easily reached from Darjeeling (126 km), Kolkata (700 km) Kalimpong (104 km) and Bagdogra (153 km). There are several regular SNT (Sikkim Nationalised Transport) buses available to travel to and fro the capital city of Sikkim-Gangtok. They also run between the district headquarters and sub-divisions of the state. SNT has its bus terminal at Siliguri. Travellers have the option of booking the tickets for it online instead of taking it directly from the counter. Other than this, there are private buses / shared Jeeps that are also available to reach Sikkim. One can also opt for private taxis / cab, if one wants to have the whole vehicle to himself. However, if you are travelling during monsoon it is advisable to avoid the roadways because of the frequent landslides and floods in this season can make the roads impassable that may delay your journey.
