If you are in Nagaland and you have not been to Shilloi Lake, you have missed out on experiencing the beauty of the largest natural lake in Nagaland. It is located in Lütsam Village of Phokhungri area under the Meluri sub-division in Phek district.

There are many legends associated with the lake. One of them being that a baby was found floating in the middle of the lake and two hands were seen bobbing the baby. It is said that the baby is the reigning queen of the lake and that the spirits of the lake are its protector. It is therefore believed that no one can drown in the lake. In fact, there have been no reported deaths by drowning in the lake. It is landlocked between pine trees.

Resplendent in natural resources, the area is known for its fishing spots. However, you have to pay a nominal feel of Rs 100. The best season to fish is between June and September. Being a haven for migratory birds like Siberian Cranes, the lake is the best place for birdwatching in the state.

You can reside at the guest house and mix with the friendly localites. You can also spend time rowing boats. Or else, you can spend your time relaxing in the guest house. The lake plays an important role in advancing tourism in Nagaland. Some of the other places to visit include Patakai Range, Myanmar Border.

Getting There 

The lake is located at a distance of 271 kilometers from Kohima and 108 kilometers from Meluri town. The closest airport is the Dimapur airport, which can be reached by hiring taxis or taking a base to the city center. From Kohima you can take a bus to Phek district where the lake is located.

The closest railway station is at Dimapur. From there, one can easily hire a cab to the lake. Visitors can also take a bus till Kohima and take a connecting bus to Phek.

By road, you can reach this tourist attraction by taking the Zunheboto-Kiphire road.

Best Time to Visit

One of the best tourist destinations in the North East, the place is best visited between November and April.
