Kanakeshwar Devasthan Temple Alibag

Kankeshwar Temple, sacred to Lord Shiva, stands high on a hilltop in the village of Mapgaon around 12 km from Alibaug, the headquarters of Raigad district. The unique architecture of the temple was built in 1674 and is the finest example of Hoysala style of architecture. The main sanctum of the temple houses 4 feet long Shiv lingam. The gate of the temple has a beautiful lion sculpted on it flanked on both sides by lamps. Another feature of Kanakeshwar Temple is ‘Pushkarni’, a tank that remains filled with water all the time. It is unfortunately closed to visitors now.
