Info About Mahadev Temple Goa

Ancient temples in India are renowned throughout the world for their outstanding architecture, but not all of them are active. Mahadev Mandir, located in Tambdi Surla, is both ancient & active. The charm of attending a puja inside a temple deemed to be of immense historical importance by the ASI is indescribable.

Upon visiting the temple, you would think that it was lost in a state of deep meditation, unbothered & undisturbed by the passing of decades & centuries.

History of Mahadev Mandir

Mahadev Mandir was built in the Jain style of architecture in the 12th century during the reign of the Kadamba Dynasty. Located away from the commotion of city life and surrounded by the dense forests of Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, it is a picture of perfect tranquillity.

Features of the Mahadev Temple

Mahadev Mandir is carved out of black basalt temple, and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. A brilliant specimen of architecture is at display here, as the temple faces east, and the first rays of the sun fall on the deity at dawn.

The panels of the side of the temple are adorned with bas relief figures of Lord Shiva, Vishnu & Brahma, with their respective consorts. The mandap is also a beautiful sight, with its roof covered with plain grey sloping slabs.

Nandi (the bull & vehicle of Lord Shiva), occupies the center of this mandap, and is surrounded by four matching columns. One of the columns bears the symbol of the Kadamba Kingdom: an elephant trampling a horse.

In the sanctum sanctorum is a Shiva Linga, situated atop a pedestal. The locals believe that there is a King Cobra who resides here permanently.

The River Surla, which flows in close proximity to the temple, can be reached via a flight of stone steps. Visiting the temple can be an enriching experience, as it gives you an insight into the rich culture & heritage of Goa.
