Information About Dudhsagar Falls South Goa

The River Mandovi starts its journey by gently flowing through the Deccan Plateau in Karnataka. Gradually, it picks up speed as it finds its way through the Western Ghats. Finally, it descends with a ferocity, raring & bursting forth with an unparalleled vengeance.

This is the Dudhsagar Falls, descending spectacularly from an incredible height of almost 1,017 feet. It gets its name, Dudhsagar, meaning sea of milk, perhaps from the fact that it creates a white spray & foam as it crashes into the waters of the lake below.

The Dudhsagar Waterfall is divided into three streams as it falls from an almost vertical cliff face. Among the locals, it is popularly known as Tambdi Surla.

Location of Dudhsagar Falls

The Story behind Dudhsagar Waterfalls

The Dudhsagar Waterfall is associated with a famous legend, which goes like this. There was a famous princess who was both modest & beautiful. Purity of heart, mind & body were traits extremely valuable.

The princess would bathe in the lake, which was located in close proximity to the castle. After her bath, she would consume a jug of milk while her helpers would gather on the shore of the lake. People believe that the jug was made of pure gold & inlaid with sparkling diamonds.

One day, as the princess was enjoying her milk as usual, a charming prince was crossing the woods in the distance. He heard the laughter of the ladies and stopped to have a look. The princess was embarrassed by her scant attire, but her helpers poured the milk in a cascade in front of her.

As a result, they created a curtain behind which the princess could wear her clothes. The cascade of milk which thus preserved the modesty of the princess, came to mean another name for Dudhsagar Falls.
