Climate in Punakha

Winter Season

Punakha experiences winter season from December to February. The season brings mild weather with cold nights and clear days. Winter here is not too cold, as the city lies in the lower parts of the country. It is an off season in terms of tourism, and thus, one can get accommodation at cheaper rates during this season. In the month of February, there is an occasional snowfall. Temperature varies from 4 degrees Celsius to 19 degrees Celsius.

Spring Season

Spring season in Punakha is from March to May. It is one of the best times to visit the city. Flowers are in full bloom during the season, while the days are warm. The weather is pleasant enough for sightseeing, and great for those who want to trek up the mountain slopes. Punakha Dromche, one of the most popular festivals in Bhutan, is celebrated in the spring season in Punakha. 9-27 degrees Celsius is the average temperature range in the spring season.

Summer Season

June to August is the time of summer season in Punakha. The season brings occasional rain, especially during the noon. It is off season in terms of tourism, and thus, the chances to score hotel deals on cheaper rates are high. The days are hot and the nights are cool, with temperature ranging from 19-32 degrees Celsius. It is advisable to carry an umbrella and sunglasses during this season.

Autumn Season

September to November is the time of the autumn season in Punakha. It is also one of the best times to explore the city. The sky remains clear and tourists can enjoy a clear vista of imposing mountain peaks. It is also an excellent time for photography and trekking. The temperature ranges from 13-29 degrees Celsius. It is the time of the year when the staple red rice of Bhutan is harvested, and the view of the mounds of rice straws by the Mo Chuu River is a delight for everyone’s eyes.
