Located in the forests near Idinjar in Thiruvananthapuram district, Kalakkayam Waterfall is one of the top places to see in the area. Kalakkayam also known as Idinjar falls is the part of the Mankayam stream that has its origin at the Agasthyavanam forest. This top tourist attraction is surrounded by an equally picturesque forest, which is great spot for birdwatching. A trail along the stream can lead people who like to hike to some really beautiful locales. One has to be cautious while stepping on the rocks to reach the small pools at the bottom of the waterfall as the rocks here are slippery and can take one down in an instant, especially in the monsoon season. For this reason, restrictions to pool entry is imposed during the monsoons.
To reach Kalakkayam from Thiruvananthapuram, one has to cross Palode, which is about 35 kms from the city. Being near to the road, the waterfall is easily accessible.
Trekking in the forest area surrounding the waterfall is a must thing to do. Apart from it, the site is ideal as a picnic destination as well.
The winter months between November and February are considered the best time to visit Kalakkayam Falls.
