History of the Festival

The tourism festival in Pelling first started in the year 2010 with the combined efforts of the district government officers, local NGOs and the Pelling Tourism Development Association in order to bring forward the hidden tourism potential of West Sikkim that in itself is replete with a number of ancient monasteries, the historical Rabdentse Ruins and a myriad of sightseeing attractions including lakes, waterfalls and gardens. Today, Pelling and its neighbouring towns are an emerging tourist spot, the credit for which primarily goes to the success of this great winter carnival which is now celebrated with much fanfare and zeal every year.

Duration of the Festival

The Kanchenjunga Winter Tourism Festival is celebrated every year for five days in the month of December at Pelling and other popular tourist spots like Uttarey, Yuksom, Tashiding and Rinchenpong in West Sikkim. Homestays, sightseeing tours, cultural programs and adventure sports competitions are some of the inseparable part of this extravagant carnival that aims at boosting tourism thereby, generating ways for a sustainable income for the local youth and their families.
