Highlights

The Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary in Thrissur district is spread across an area of 125 Sq km, covering the parts of Palapilli-Nelliampathy forests and the northern boundary of the Chimmini Sanctuary. Established in the year 1985, the sanctuary has more than 50 different kinds of orchids, innumerable rare medicinal plants, teak, rosewood, and so on. It has a wide variety of fauna, which includes over 25 species of carnivores like leopard, tiger, jungle cat, and herbivores like the Sambar deer, barking deer, spotted deer, Indian bison, and Asian elephant. Not just this, but 100 species of birds and several species of snakes and lizards, that are noted in this jungle.

The highest peak in the sanctuary stands at 45 to 900 meters above sea level and the average annual rainfall it receive is about 3000 mm. The best season to visit this lush green forest is between October to March, when the surroundings of the jungle are ideal for animal spotting and trekking. The park has many accommodation options at the information center in Peechi, available in the form of rest houses.

Flora

The Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary has a large variety of flora, including Moist Deciduous Forest, Evergreen forests, and Semi-evergreen forests. One may find trees like rosewood, teak, thenmavu, irul, venteak, karakil, kalpine, whiteakil, kambakam, and ambani, that grow in abundance in this jungle.

Fauna

The dense jungle of this sanctuary provides shelter to a number of wild animals, resident & migratory birds. There are close to 60 types of birds, 10 types of reptiles, along with meat eaters like leopard, tiger, vixen, Bison, etc. and grass eaters like deer, elks, barking deer, elephants, and many more.
