The picturesque Sholayar forest ranges give way to the majestic Athirapally & Vazhachal Waterfalls, that joins the Chalakudy River after plummeting down from 80 feet. These stunning falls are an absolute treat for the eyes, especially during the monsoon, when the cool spray of water makes Athirapally a more scenic and peaceful spot. The place offers a restful escape to those living in crowded cities and give them a very calm and serene experience in the midst of sizzling weather.
Athirapally is the land of rivers, forest, and great waterfalls and it houses some of the largest and most beautiful waterfalls in Kerala. This twin waterfall is a major tourist attraction in Trichur District and is located on the edge of Sholayar ranges, which is beautifully intertwined with lush green forest cover and sizzling cascades. This waterfall is one of several scenic waterfalls in Kerala, that are important to the local tourism industry. So, the local communities along with Chalakudy River banded the construction of a hydroelectric dam, proposed by the government to be built upstream from Athirapally.
The dam would have destroyed the critical habitat of many important plant and animal species, including the rare Cochin Forest Cane Turtle, the endangered Great Indian Hornbill, the Lion-Tailed Macaque, and the Nilgiri Langur.
The exquisite beauty of Athirapally & Vazhachal Waterfalls can literally take your breath away with its wild and natural surroundings, that you can capture for a really good experience. The Vazhachal waterfall, lies only 5 kms away from Athirapally, but it too plunges and joins to the Chalakudi River, which is famous for its thick green cover and exotic wilderness. The soothing sound of this waterfall is so refreshing that it can turn any tired body into a lively and invigorated soul.
One can try trekking at Athirapally and walk down to the bottom of the waterfall to enjoy the spectacular view of the fall in close proximity. The roaring sound of the fall and the feel of water drops on your face can make your journey to this spot more refreshing and memorable. However, be more careful while climbing up as the rocks may turn slippery and there is a chance for you to fall down.
