This waterfall is one of several scenic waterfalls in Kerala, that are important to the local tourism industry. So, the local communities along with Chalakudy River banded the construction of a hydroelectric dam, proposed by the government to be built upstream from Athirapally.

The dam would have destroyed the critical habitat of many important plant and animal species, including the rare Cochin Forest Cane Turtle, the endangered Great Indian Hornbill, the Lion-Tailed Macaque, and the Nilgiri Langur.
