Lavishly sprawled at an altitude of 5425 m, the crystal clear Gurudongmar is a spectacular lake that mirrors the iced mountains enclosing it from all sides. It is one of the highest lakes in the world and is named after Guru Padmasambhava; also known as Guru Dongmar. The lake is considered to be carrying religious significance both in Buddhist and Sikhs religions. The surprising fact about this sanctified lake is that even in extreme winters, a part of this lake never freezes. The myth behind this is that Guru Dongmar had once touched and consecrated this lake and made it partially frozen throughout the year. The Lake also carries curing properties and offers the amazing view of Mount Siniolchu and Khanchendzonga. Gurudongmar Lake is extremelypopular amongst the tourists because of its religious significance, scenic beauty and admirable treks.

What To Do And See

Chopta Valley is a combined tour that comes with Gurudongmar Lake. Then around the lake there is another spiritual attraction for the peace seekers - Sarva Dharma Sthala, which is popularly called as the temple for all religions. In just about 9 km of distance, the Tso Lhamu Lake which is famous for being the source for the Teesta River can also be explored to gather the extended charm amidst the nature. The other places that can be visited along with the trip to Gurudongmar lake is Lachen village and Thangu village that are just 3-4 hours drive away.

Getting There

Gurudongmar is around 174 km away through the avid greenery and astriding waterfalls from Gangtok enroute Lachen. It is always recommended to the travellers to take a night stay at Lachen to refresh themselves before leaving either for the trek or drive to beautiful Gurudongmar lake.

But before visiting, one has to acquire the inner line permit because of its proximity to the Indo-Tibet border, a sensitive area from the military point of view.

Best Time To Visit

The months from April - June are considered to be the best time to visit this place. The weather is quite pleasant and the place remains easily accessible for the tourists during this time. It might get a bit cold from November - Jan so sufficiently equip yourself with warm clothes so as to witness partially frozen lake in cold weather.
