No tour in Old Goa is complete without visiting the Church of St Francis of Assisi that is joined by an old palace of the Archbishop to another popular church in the state, Se Cathedral. The church is majorly known for its Tuscan style and Portuguese-Manueline style of architecture, and intricately carved artwork adorning its interiors.

Close to the Church of St Francis of Assisi, a convent was built which was converted into an Archaeological Museum of History in 1964. The museum is one of the prime attractions of this popular church in Goa.

History of Church of St. Francis of Assisi

The history of Church of St. Francis of Assisi states that it was first built in 1521 by the Fransican monks. When this structure started to decay, a new church started to build in 1665 which retained the portal of the old structure done in Portuguese–Manueline style.

Architecture of Church of St. Francis of Assisi

The architecture of the Church of St. Francis of Assisi is an interesting mix of Tuscan and Portuguese-Manueline style. The façade of the church is built in the Tuscan style of architecture with the portal being Manueline since it is retained from the older structure. The façade of the church is distinctive as it is flanked by octagonal towers and a small niche housing the statue of Our Lady of Miracles brought from Jaffna in Sri Lanka.
