Kargil Overview

The second largest town after Leh, which is approximately 235 kilometers away, Kargil is the gateway to the Ladakh region if one is travelling from Srinagar, which is approximately 210 kilometers away. It has a brief history that dates back to the 9th century and is also the whelming part of the Kargil War, 1999. Kargil, which is nestled at an average elevation of 2,676 meters, along the river Suru, is an important stopover to several trekking destinations in the Ladakh region. Further, the town also encircles some remote destinations of Ladakh namely, Drass that is approximately 60 kilometers away and Padum, which is approximately 240 kilometers away. Being a trekker’s hub, the town falls under several trekking routes like the Sumdo Chinmu village to Alchi, Zoji La and Stakspi La.
