Started out as an idea to support English trade in the Coromandel Coast, the year 1644 saw the establishment of St. George’s Fort in Chennai. This popular heritage site of Tamilnadu has not only witnessed events and wars but also has served as the core of British rule for more than three centuries. St. George’s Fort has experienced the command of both the French (1746-1749) but the English as well. This heritage attraction has not lost its charm even though it has been on the target of Sultan of Mysore, Hyder Ali or the French. As time passed the area around was turned into a city and even though the days of the fort are occupied by politics,tourist attractions like the Fort Museum which was the first office of Madras Bank, followed by St. Mary’s Church and Wellesley House.

The best time to take on a sightseeing tour to St.George’s Fort is between the months November to February as the temperature remains cool and pleasant.
