Situated close to lucknow on the banks of the Ganges, Kanpur,
besides being a major industrial town, also has and relgious importance.
The place is mentioned by AL-Beruni in Kitaabul-Hind . The dargah
of the Sufi saint, Makdoon Shah, built by Feroze Shah Tughlag,
is situated here. the British set up an army cantommentand the
first tannery was setup at Jajmau in the 19th century which led
to the proliferation of tanniries that exist at kanpur today Kanpur
played an important role as a centre for the freedom movement
. Independence activits such as Nanareo Peshwa, Tatya Tope,Chandrashekhar
Azad,etc., were closely associated with the city. Many great hindu
literary figures like Acharya Mahavir Parshad Dwivedi, G.S Vidyarthi,
etc., are also product of kanpur. A bussines City, enjoys prolic
trade, especially in leather accessories, plastic , textiles and
can be termed in this connection as the Manchester of east India.
The city has recently undergone tremendous change.
