Mandawa,
250 kilometers from Delhi, is a small and busy market town that
was settled in the 18th century and was fortified by the dominant
merchant families. Today it has some of the finest painted Havelis
in the region and is a great place to just wander around and explore
on your own.
The
Fort dates back to 1760 and dominates the town. If you are interested
in the seeing the painted Havelis make sure you see: the Bansidhar
Newatia Haveli with a curious mix of modern themes painted on
the outer eastern wall; the Gulab Rai Ladia Haveli (1870) has
some fantastic murals, some of the finest you'll find in this
region; and the Harlalka well and Majisa ka Kuan well.

Castle Mandawa
This castle was built in the year 1755 and is approachable through
two gateways mounted with cannons. Several narrow staircases and
courtyards connect the dinning room with the rest of the rooms,
which were added to the palace over the centuries. A terrace offers
a view over the entire town. Now converted into a charming heritage
hotel, do not miss to enjoy the dinner in the open environment
of the castle's back lawns.
