Brief History of the Festival

A classic win of good over evil is the storyline that surrounds the history of this famous festival among tourists travelling across the globe. As per the legend, it is said that Chamundeshwari an incarnation of Goddess Durga defeated the popular demon king, Mahishasur and the weapons so used by her were never brought into use and hence were kept and worshipped. Another myth that is linked with this traditional event states that Arjuna, one of the 5 Pandava brothers found his weapon on Vijayadashmi from the Shami tree which he kept there 13 years ago before setting forth for his forced exile. Arjuna came out as a winner in the Kurukshetra war and the Pandavas came back on the day of Vijayadashami which is revered as prosperous for new beginnings.

Saraswati Pooja is known for being an essential part of the Golu celebrations and is observed on the 9th day of Navratri which occurs in the month of September-October.
