Also knowns as Thornhill Mayne Memorial, Public Library is yet another popular attraction in Prayagraj. Founded in the year 1864, the library strategically stands inside the complex of Chandra Shekhar Azad Park. It is one of the oldest of its kind and also the largest library in the state of Uttar Pradesh. This renowned tourist site in Prayagraj holds a collection of more than 125000 books, 21 Arabic manuscripts, 28 different newspapers and 40 types of magazines. Not just this, at the library, tourists can also spot various blue books, parliament papers, old manuscripts, government publications and journals that date back to the 19th-century. Apart from the rich assortment of books, journals and manuscripts, this must-visit tourist place in Prayagraj is also known for its historical building that boasts an impressive architecture.

Architecture

The building, renowned as Thornbill Mayne Memorial, which serves as the Public Library traces its history to the 19th-century. It is a great masterpiece of Scottish Baronial architecture which was designed by Richard Roskell Bayne. The building includes arcaded cloisters and lofty towers.

For tourists, Public Library in Prayagraj stays open from Friday to Wednesday. On every Thursday, the library remains closed. Tourists can visit the place on any of these days from 8 in the morning to 6 in the evening.
