Devotees undertake an uphill trek of around 14 km to reach the shrine, located at the Trikuta Mountains. It takes around 6 to 9 hours to reach the caves which are among the 108 shakti peethas. Ponies, palanquins and helicopters are available and can be hired to reach the temple.

The Bhairon Mandir also known as 'Kaala Bhairava', situated at a distance of 3 kilometers from the sacred cave is a very important travel destination in Katra for tourists and devotees. It is believed that the excursion to Vaishno Devi only completes after visiting the Bhairon Mandir.

Another holy site which attracts devotees from various geographical locations of the world and considered one of the top tourist attractions is the Charan Paduka. A sacred destination at a distance of 1.5 kilometers from Banganga. According to local mythology, Goddess Durga stayed at this place when she was being chased by Bhairavnath. Banganga, located just 3 kilometers away from Katra, is another important travel destination for pilgrims embarking on an odyssey from Katra to Bhawan.
