Bone Marrow Transplant Surgery in India

Each year, the country is visited by a growing number of medical tourists from across the globe to undergo diverse treatments according to their medical needs. Bone marrow transplant is one such specialty treatment being sought by many medical tourists flying to India.

The bone marrow is a spongy tissue inside some bones in the body that can produce different blood cells. When the bone marrow function is impaired due to cancer or other types of diseases, a bone marrow transplant (BMT) is necessary. It involves replacing the unhealthy marrow with a healthy one either from the patient’s own body (autologous transplant) or from a donor (allogenic transplant).

Indications for Bone Marrow Transplant

Listed are certain conditions for which bone marrow transplantation is considered as an appropriate treatment:

  • Cancers like multiple myeloma, leukemia, or lymphoma
  • Damage caused to the bone marrow caused during cancer treatment (chemotherapy or radiation therapy)
  • Diseases involving bone marrow failure such as aplastic anemia
  • Immunodeficiency syndromes or genetic diseases like sickle cell anemia or thalassemia

Bone Marrow Transplant Procedure

Before the transplant, chemotherapy may be administered to destroy the diseased bone marrow. Thereafter, the donor bone marrow is transfused into the patient, usually through a central venous catheter. These donor cells, travel through the bloodstream to the bone marrow and start to multiply into healthy blood cells.  While the healthy blood cells take time to get into circulation and start functioning, strict infection prevention protocols are followed, and the patient is closely monitored. It may take about 2-6 weeks for the transplanted bone marrow to start functioning normally.
