Liver Transplant Surgery in India

Liver transplant in India is one of the most successfully performed surgeries. A liver transplant involves surgically replacing a failed or a diseased liver with a normal, healthy one and usually recommended for people who have end-stage liver disease.  A healthy liver can be obtained from a donor who is deceased or alive.

Liver transplant surgery - Eligibility:

The decision to perform liver transplantation depends on various factors. Also, each transplant centre may have different rules about who can undergo liver transplant surgery. Generally, individuals with the following conditions can have a liver transplant done:

  • Acute liver failure
  • Chronic liver failure
  • Liver insufficiency
  • Liver cirrhosis
  • Decompensated liver disease

However, individuals with the following conditions are contraindicated for liver transplant surgery:

  • Severe pulmonary hypertension
  • A severe, irreversible medical illness that reduces short-term life expectancy
  • Current or chronic uncontrollable infection
  • Metastatic cancer
  • Severe heart or other health problems
  • Severe, uncontrolled psychiatric disease
  • Active substance abuse (alcohol or drugs)
  • History of inability to follow a strict medical regimen

Liver transplant surgery – The Procedure

A liver transplant surgery may need you to stay in the hospital. The procedure may take about 12 hours, depending on the condition, the surgeon's approach, and other factors.

If a liver from a deceased donor is available, the patient will be asked to come to the hospital immediately. However, if the liver is from a living donor, the surgery will be scheduled in advance. In this case, the donor will be operated first, where a portion of the liver is removed.

Before the surgery, a complete evaluation is done to ensure that the patient is healthy enough to undergo surgery. The patient will be sedated using general anesthesia.

Long incisions are made across the abdomen to access the liver. The precise location and size of the incision may vary based on the surgeon's approach. The diseased liver is removed, and the donor liver is placed inside the body. The patient's blood vessels and bile ducts are connected to the donor liver. Then the surgeon closes the incision using stitches and/or staples. The patient will be moved to the intensive care unit to begin recovery.

The part of the liver obtained from a living donor is left in the patient's body, which regenerates rapidly and reaches the normal size in a couple of weeks.
