Laryngectomy Surgery in India

Laryngectomy is a surgical procedure done to remove cancers from the larynx (voice box). Depending on the extent of malignancy, it is of two types, partial or total laryngectomy. In partial laryngectomy, only a portion of the larynx is removed, whereas a total laryngectomy involves the removal of the entire larynx.

Laryngectomy is one of the many treatment modalities for laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers.

Laryngectomy – Eligibility

Laryngectomy is recommended for patients who:

  • Are diagnosed with cancer in the larynx.
  • Have severe trauma or an injury of the neck, such as a gunshot wound or other injury.
  • Have radionecrosis (tissue death after radiation therapy) of the larynx.

Laryngectomy -The Procedure

Before laryngectomy, a complete physical examination and blood tests are done. You will be instructed to stop certain medications, such as ibuprofen and aspirin, a few days before the surgery. Overnight fasting is recommended before the day of the surgery.

The surgical procedure is performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, the surgeon will make an incision in the neck area to access the larynx and remove the diseased or damaged tissue. In total laryngectomy, once the larynx is removed, the surgeon will create a hole in front of the trachea to facilitate breathing. As you recover, a prosthetic voice box is implanted in the throat to help you speak. Finally, the throat muscles and the neck are closed with the stitches.

After the surgery, you may need to stay in the hospital for about three to five days. Follow up visits are needed ten days after the discharge. A total of 15 days or more is required to get a laryngectomy done and recover after that.
