Bandarpunch Glacier Uttarakhand

Bandarpunch which literally means “monkey’s tail”, is a glacier which lies in the western Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. With numerous legends attached to it, this glacier is one of the most popular escapades for countless trekking fanatics. Situated around 6316 m above the sea level, Bandarpunch Glacier nestles broadly on the slope of three peaks namely Bandarpunch I (6316m) and Bandarpunch II (6102m) and Kalanag also known as the Black Peak (6387m). The beauty and the uniqueness of this natural wonder is that it feeds the river Ganga and the river Yamuna.

Opening up to the magnificent views of the Himalayan Peaks, this glacier can be best visited between the months of March to October. The month of May or June is considered to be the perfect time to trek this spot. During this time the trail to Bandarpunch Glacier features abundant spring flowers in their full bloom. One can also get lucky in spotting out rare species of animals lolling around at this place.

The glacier is preferable to hike once the snowstorms have passed. The trekking route is mildly difficult requiring a slight technical climbing. Every year the glacier allures adventure freaks who love to venture out and explore its mesmeric pavilions. A hike to the Bandarpunch Glacier truly offers an experience worth recalling.

Bandarpunch Glacier can be easily accessed from Dehradun. Travelers can board a bus from Dehradun till Sankri. On reaching this spot, one can further hire a jeep till Taluka (11km) and has to journey forward till Osai (14km). Serving as an ultimate camping site, Osia Ruinsara Tal situated right below the snout of the Glacier is an ideal point of access in case of Bandarpunch Glacier and its captivating surroundings.
