Located on Rue de la Marine, Sri Aurobindo Ashram was founded in the year 1926 by Sri Aurobindo Ghosh - one of India’s renowned philosopher-poets. Besides Aurobindo, Mirra Alfassa - a Parisian mystic, musician and painter, was another instrumental part behind the establishment of Sri Aurobindo Ashram. She was also given the name ‘The Mother’. At the time of its inception, the Ashram just had two dozen of disciples, but with over the year, it has grown tremendously and today it has a large community with over 1500 disciples. At present, Sri Aurobindo Ashram is one of those tourist places in Pondicherry that are frequented by a large number of tourists every year. The Ashram building also includes the remains of Aurobindo and his disciple the mother. Under a frangipani tree, the samadhis of both are built in the centre of the courtyard and are generally thronged with the devotees. Every day, Samadhis are decorated with fresh flowers. From Chennai’s Koyembedu Bus Stand, one can hire a bus to Pondicherry.
