Retinal Detachment Surgery in India

Someone said so appropriately, “Eyes are the windows to the world”, our eyes let us see and appreciate the colourful world around us. The retina, a structure inside the eye, is crucial to how and what we see. However, due to several reasons, the retina may get detached from the inner layers of the eye, causing vision loss. The good news is that the retinal detachment can be surgically corrected in most patients. Retinal detachment surgery in India is a common procedure with positive patient outcomes.

Eligibility criteria:

One can undergo retinal detachment surgery if he/she meets the following criteria:

  • Diagnosed with retinal detachment
  • Vision is impaired
  • Other treatment options were not successful
  • Above 18 years of age, depending on the severity of the damage, exceptions can be made
  • Not pregnant
  • In good health with a strong immune system

Procedures:

Based on the severity of retinal detachment and its location, one of the following surgeries will be selected:

Pneumatic retinopexy: This procedure involves injecting a bubble of air or gas precisely into the centre part of the eye. The bubble is positioned properly so that it pushes the area containing the hole(s) against the wall of the eye. This stops the fluid from flowing behind the retina. The fluid and the bubble gradually are absorbed on its own, causing the retina to adhere to the wall of the eye. After the procedure, the patient may have to hold his head in a certain position for several days, so that the bubble remains in the proper position.

Scleral buckling: This procedure involves suturing a tiny, flexible band of silicone over the affected area around the white part of the eye (sclera). The band gently pushes the sides of the eye and moves them towards the retina, helping the retina reattach. A scleral buckle that encircles the entire eye like a belt may be created, if there are several holes, tears, or an extensive detachment. The buckle doesn’t block the vision and remains in its place permanently.

Vitrectomy: This procedure involves removing the vitreous along with other tissue that is tugging on the retina. Then, gas, air, or silicone oil is injected into the vitreous space to help flatten the retina. Gradually, the gas, air, or oil will be absorbed, and the vitreous space will refill with the body fluid. Vitrectomy can be combined with a scleral buckling procedure.
