Updated: November 5, 2018 /

The Srinagar Kashmir Valley witnessed heavy snowfall in the month of November on 3rd November, 2018 for the first time since 2009. Due to this, power was cut on a large scale, because of which many areas were sunk in the dark.

The problem occurred due to the fall of branches of trees on the electric supply lines. On this, Kashmir’s Chief Engineer Hashmat Kaji said that the entire team of Power Development Department was working on the restoration of transmission lines and grid stations.

The Effects of the Snowfall

Effect of Snowfall

Because of the heavy snowfall and powercut, the flights between the Mughal Road and the rest of the rest of the country were also closed. Also, because of the poor visibility all the flights from the Srinagar airport had to be cancelled on Saturday afternoon. Adding to it more, the Srinagar-Leh highway and Mughal road had been closed which connects the valley with the Ladakh region and Rajouri district of the Jammu division.

Authorities even said that the heavy snowfall caught nearly 500 people in Peer Ki Gali on the Mughal Road and the Jawahar Tunnel area of Srinagar-Jammu highway which had been rescued soon. Also, on Saturday night, a nine-year-old girl has been killed and three members of a nomadic family were injured when a landslide struck their tent.

So, after the efforts made by the entire team of the Power Development Department, electricity supply was restored in 90% areas of Srinagar and in nearly 70% of the rural areas.
