Unlike Hindu religious places, Muslim sacred destinations are quite less in Uttarakhand where the pilgrimage can be performed. Even though there are mosques in every city and town of the state, there remains only one popular pilgrimage place called Piran Kaliyar Sharif that is famous across the country amongst Muslim devotees. A ‘dargah/mausoleum and the major Muslim attraction in Uttarakhand, Piran Kaliyar Sharif is reckoned to be the symbol of unity between Hindus and Muslims and is situated towards the south of Haridwar. Moreover, it is believed that the place is blessed with the Mystical powers that fulfill the desires of the devotees who come here to seek blessings.
Piran Kaliyar Sharif is the mausoleum of Alauddin Ali Ahmed Sabir Kalyari who was also known as Sabir Kaliyari and was the Sufi saint of Chishti order. It is as 13th-century dargah and is said to have been built by Ibrahim Lodhi, an Afghan ruler. One of the most sacred shrines which not only attract Muslim devotees but, also people of other faiths as well. Piran Kaliyar remains open for the whole year and is situated at a distance of around 10 km from Roorkee. Apart from Piran Kaliyar, Muslims in Uttarakhand head to the mosques that they have built almost in every corner of the state.
