Named after the great sage Vedvyas - the man behind the composition of the Hindu epic Mahabharata, Vedvyas Temple in Rourkela is located near to the confluence of Koel, Shankha, and Saraswati Rivers that all together form Brahmani River. Since the temple is remarked as highly religious, every year, thousands of pilgrims flock to this place to solemnize thread ceremonies, marriages, and other rituals. Rituals of last rites are also performed on the banks of the river. Apart from all this, the temple witnesses a large gathering of devotees on the day of Shivaratri. During this time, a 10-14 days long fete is also organized at this Hindu religious site in Rourkela. As per the beliefs, there is a cave on the riverbank, referred to as Vyasa Cave, which is said to be the place where the sage Vedvyas wrote Mahabharata. However, due to the soil erosion, the cave is not accessible now. The stories also say that there was also an underground tunnel in between the cave and the river where sage Vedvyas used to pay homage to the god without getting in the notice of anyone.
