Established by Government of India on 5 August 1954, Lalit Kala Akademi, also known as National Academy of Art, is an autonomous entity which was founded by the Ministry of Culture. Not just this, the Akademi is serving as the leading cultural body in the sector of visual arts in India, and thus, is also one of the popular tourist attractions in Delhi for art lovers. For a long time, Lalit Kala Akademi is pioneering the arts domain and showcasing the world the beauty of Indian art. It does so by providing scholarships, sponsorships, organising various art programs and also allowing tourists to explore the art galleries at the institution. This art gallery in Delhi houses a well-preserved collection of modern and contemporary art in India. In total, this four-floor institution houses five galleries for tourists to explore. Moreover, the organization also hosts many exhibitions round the year.

In these exhibitions, the institution welcomes all sort of artists, both seniors and the upcoming ones. In the past, Lalit Kala Akademi has also added various artworks from Workshops/Camps, Art Fair, Chairman’s Discretionary Funds and Artists Aid Fund in their exhibitions in order to help the needy artists. Besides, the organization also purchases awards winning artworks that are put up here on display as the organization’s personal collection for the visitors. While on your visit to Lalit Kala Akademi, you can expect to see the masterpieces of some eminent artists like M.F. Hussain, F.N. Souza, Tyeb Mehta, K.K. Hebbar, Dhanraj Bhagat, S.H. Raza, G.R. Santosh, Dhruv Mistry, V.S. Gaitonde, and many others. Not just this, the organization also houses two separate sections of library and archive. The library consists of a rare and finest assortment of books and journals on art. There are more the 8700 books on various arts like sculpture, painting, photography, drawing, architecture, and graphic art. On the other hand, the archive section includes records and evidence of various events of Lalit Kala Akademi that consist of photographs, catalogues, seminar papers, annual reports, CDs, audio visual materials, newspaper clippings, and more.
