Birla Temple Kolkata

The magnificent grandeur and impeccable craftsmanship of Birla Mandir in Kolkata come together to make a surreal sight for the devotees and visitors alike. Located in Ballygunge, this popular Hindu temple in Kolkata was built by the Birla family. Inside the temple, there are idols of Lord Krishna with Radha, Lord Shiva and Goddess Durga. The construction of this imposing temple took around 26 years to complete and in the year 1996, it was finally open for the public.

At present, besides being an important pilgrimage site in Kolkata, the temple also holds the status of being one of the prime landmarks of the city. Round the year, the temple celebrates various Hindu festivals. However, Janmashtami celebration is one of the most important ones as the temple witnesses a large gathering of pilgrims. On this day, this popular religious place in Kolkata is illuminated with lights.

Architecture of the Temple

The architecture of Birla Temple is influenced by Lingraj Temple and Laxmi Narayan Temple of Bhubaneswar. It depicts a perfect blend of both traditional and contemporary styles. Birla Temple includes the intricate work of the Rajasthani style of architecture. The entire temple complex is built of white marble and sandstone. The indigenous craftsmanship of the temple is something that stands out. Like exterior, the interior of this must-visit shrine in Kolkata is equally impressive. One of its highlights is the pictorial engravings of Bhagavad Gita. It also includes marble carvings depicting shlokas. Along with that, the ceiling is also an important highlight of the temple’s architecture. It is beautifully adorned with chandeliers and electric diyas.
