The Vellar Arts and Crafts Village at Vellar is spread across 8.5 acres of land. The complex consists of an amphitheatre, museums, studios for craftspeople and an art gallery. There are dedicated spaces for artisans and craftspeople. Most of the craftspeople belong to South Kerala. One of the top things to do at the arts and crafts village at Vellar is buying souvenirs and curios from the various range of exhibits on display. Tourists looking for new tourist attractions in Kerala, or a different experience, can visit this village.
The Kerala Arts & Handicrafts Village also has modules for more than 750 craftsmen and artisans working on their concept with the visitors looking on. This is quite interesting, as you actually get to watch the artisans at work. There are artisans working on a wide variety of materials including wood, bamboo, reed, palm leaf, coir and cotton. The complex consists of 28 studios with more than 50 crafts on display.
The village will also host an annual international theme based art and craft biennale. Paintings, terracotta, handloom, sculptures, reed and bamboo products along with workshops would be conducted in the village. Other events included in the village calendar are Crafts Food Festival (in April) and Arts Festival (in September).
