Frequently Asked Questions For Traveling to Tibet

For Indian citizens, the first priority is to get a Tibet Visa or Tibet Travel Permit. However, tourists planning to visit the unopened areas including Mt. Everest, Mt. Kailash and more, additional permits are required which is to be approved by several government departments. Tourists planning to enter Tibet from Kathmandu has to apply for travel permit through the Chinese Embassy at Kathmandu. For those travelling to Tibet from China, you still have to get the Tibet Travel Permit from China.

The foreign tourists except Hong Kong and Macau citizens are required to have a Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) before planning to travel in and around Tibet. An additional permit is required if planning to visit the best tourism places of Tibet including Mt. Everest, Mt.Kailash. Foreign tourists planning to travel to Tibet from Nepal can avail the Tibet Visa or Tibet Travel Permit from the Chinese Embassy at Kathmandu or can also get it from China. Other than this, diplomats, journalists and certain professional media photographers are not permitted to enter on a TTP and must apply through the diplomatic channels of their respective countries or media companies.

Processing a Tibet Travel Permit usually takes up to two weeks. In theory, it can be completed within 3-4 days but often takes longer. Tourists planning to travel to Tibet must book a tour in advance by partnering with a registered travel agency who can aid you in obtaining an original Tibet Travel Permit (not a copy) before you board your flight or train to Tibet.

The best time to visit is between April and October when the weather is pleasant for Tibet Tour with family, friends, kids and elderly. During Tibetan New Year which takes place either in February or March, the Chinese Government periodically restricts the issuance of visas. So check with your travel agency if you are planning a trip during this time.

The popular route to enter Tibet is from Kathmandu and Indian travellers require a passport to cross through this highway route as it can be crossed either by a bus (not so recommendable as it is quite a long route) or flight. However, Indians, Nepalese and Tibetans prefer travelling by air. Tibet houses only one international airport which is at Lhasa and is well-connected to Kathmandu Airport in Nepal. For Indian travellers, it is easier to catch a flight back to India through the major cities including Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkata from Kathmandu.

Note: There are no direct flights available from Lhasa to anywhere in India. Travellers need to go to Kathmandu first and from there board a flight to Lhasa.

High altitude sickness is common when travelling to popular tourism places in Tibet. It is mandatory to consult your doctor before leaving for Tibet. It is a good idea to carry a well-supplied first-aid kit that has all the basic and important medicines like Diamox for altitude sickness, Paracetamol or Ibuprofen for pain, fever or inflammation, Cold and flu tablets, throat lozenges and prescribed nasal decongestant.

It is important to carry essential things when travelling to any place. When it is about travelling to Tibet here are few things that you shouldn’t miss packing.

  • Warm clothes like sweaters and fleeces which are needed during the summer months as well as the day-night temperature drop is big. Also, a thick down coat is mandatory if you plan to visit Everest.
  • If you happen to visit Tibet during the low season, make sure to carry mountain winter clothes like a thick down coat.
  • Bring sunglasses and sunscreen that will protect you from strong sunlight.
  • Lip cream protect your lips from dryness.
  • Comfortable walking shoes as most of the places have steep steps to climb.
  • Light Snacks for long road trips or in case if you don’t want to have the local food.

Travelling to Tibet with children can be difficult as there can be health risks in young children at high altitude as their lungs, brains and hearts are still developing. It is recommended to wait for your child to turn at least 5 years old before planning a visit to Tibet.

At least 4 days are required to visit Lhasa. Remember that the altitude in Lhasa is around 3600 meter for which you need to take it easy on day 1 in order to let your body get accustomed to the altitude. It will take at least 2 days to explore Lhasa. On day 4 you can return to respective countries. In addition to this, if you wish to visit Everest Base camp then you should consider a ten-day trip to Tibet.
