Best Time to Visit Gangotri

Gangotri remains cold almost round the year, yet the best time to visit this place is in between April and June, and September and October. Summers here are quite pleasant, which also mark the ideal season to pay homage at the Gangotri shrine. Monsoons are accompanied by heavy rainfall and it's the time when travelling becomes a little difficult. Winters are freezing here with a lot of snowfall making the weather too chilly.

In Gangotri, the summers set in the starting of April and end in the month of May. Being one of the perfect seasons of Gangotri, summer is extremely pleasing here. In this season the day temperature never crosses 30°C mark, while the nights are very cold. This season is the best time for a pilgrimage or an exciting sightseeing trip.

Trip Essentials

You must take along a list of essentials including a day pack, a pair of comfortable walking shoes, trekking pants, woollen clothing, windproof jacket, sunglasses, sun cap, sunscreen lotion, lip balm, walking stick, water bottle, personal toiletries and torch/ flashlight with extra batteries. Pocket few dry fruits and also carry energy bar & energy drinks like Gatorade/ electral (ORS) to avoid dehydration.


Beginning from late July till the end of September, Gangotri welcomes the monsoons. Heavy rainfall causes lots of difficulties like landslides while travelling to the Gangotri Temple. One, who wishes to visit Gangotri in this season, must be well-equipped to handle the challenging weather of this place.

Don't forget to carry a day pack with rain cover, a pair of trekking pants, waterproof hiking shoes, water resistant jacket/windproof jacket, waterproof gloves, woollen clothes, thick fleece, thick wollen socks, raincoat/poncho, walking stick, torch/flashlight with extra batteries and personal toiletries. You must carry a water bottle, few dry fruits and energy drinks as well.

Winter season in Gangotri starts in the month of November and lasts till March. Winters here are too chilly accompanied by heavy snowfall. The roads to the shrine remain blocked, thus the visitors are advised not to plan a journey to this place in the winter season.
