Nischay Tamulam

The Nischay Tamulam is the engagement ceremony. In Karnataka, the betel leaves and nuts are offered to the bride's father and sari, coconut, blouse and sweets are gifted to the bride by the groom's family. This is the confirmation of the wedding that will be scheduled in the days to come.

Naandi

Naandi is a ritual that is performed by both the bride and the groom in their houses. This ceremony is held so that the wedding takes place uninterruptedly. The bride and the groom seeks the blessings of god for a hassle free wedding ceremony.

Kaashi Yatre

Kaashi Yatre is an interesting pre wedding ritual in Karnataka in which the groom pretends to leave for Kashi city as he is devoid of a suitable bride. He only stops when his maternal uncle shows to him the bride chosen by him.

Dev Karya Ceremony

Dev Karya marks the ritual when the just before the groom leaves for the bride's village, all the items for wedding are placed in front of Lord Ganesha to seek his blessings. After this ceremony, turmeric paste is applied on the bodies of the both bride and groom.

South Indian Post Wedding Ceremonies

Griha Pravesh

In this Karnataka post wedding ceremony, the bride is welcomed into the groom's home by the mother-in-law who places a vessel filled with rice at the entrance and then the bride is asked to spill the rice vessel by touching it with her right foot.

Name Change Ceremony

After the Griha Pravesh, the name change ceremony takes place in the groom's house. In this ceremony, the groom decides a name for his wife and inscribes it with a ring on a plate, containing rice.
