Adorned with the Himalayas, Uttarakhand is home to numerous enthralling treks. While a large number of treks in Uttarakhand Himalayas can be done without the need of any permission, there are a few that require Inner Line Permit (ILP), Permit from SDM (Sub District Magistrate), LIU, Gram Panchayat and even permission from the Forest Department.
Original and photocopy of Government photo identity card: One is required to carry any Government identity proof such as a driver’s license, Aadhar card, Voter ID card or a passport.
Disclaimer certificate: This is a legal requirement that is asked by the travel agency organizing your trekking expedition. One has to send all the necessary documents to the company so that all the documents work for trekking can be done well in advance.
Medical certificate: On several high altitude treks in Uttarakhand, a medical certificate has to be presented to get the trekking permit in a specific region or forest. On some treks we need a medical certificate as well. This is required by the forest department for one’s identification.
Trekking permits in Uttarakhand have to be issued from the district headquarters of the location where the trek is situated. The SDM Office, LIU, Gram Panchayat, and Forest Department Office have the authority to issue the trekking permits in Uttarakhand. A letter or a form has to be duly filled and then submitted at one of these offices in advance for getting the permission.
Getting a permit/permission to trek in Uttarakhand can take anywhere between 1 and 7 days. Thus, it is important to apply for the permit in advance.
