The northern most union territory of India, Ladakh has rugged terrains, high altitude, and harsh climate which make its best time to visit slightly different from the rest of the country. The ideal time for trekking in Ladakh is between June and September when there is no snow blocking the trails and the temperature is also bearable. All the important treks like Stok Kangri, Markha Valley, Rumtse to Tsomoriri, Nubra Valley, Sham Valley, Lamayuru to Chilling, Spituk to Matho, Padum to Darcha are accessible during this time of the year.
The popular winter treks in Ladakh are Chadar Trek also known as Frozen River Trek in Zanskar Region (January and February) and Snow Leopard Trek (November – March).
In the months between October and April, Ladakh can be accessed via airways as the two important passes, Rohtang La in Himachal Pradesh and Zoji La in Kashmir are blocked by snow. Driving inside Ladakh also becomes a tedious task with all the roads covered in snow.
