Khasi Hills Meghalaya

Named after the famous Khasi tribe, the Khasi Hills are one of the most gorgeous hill destinations in Meghalaya. A part of the Shillong plateau in the North Eastern state of Meghalaya, the hills are connected with the larger Patkai range in the east, and are bestowed with a surreal scenic beauty dotted with lush deep valleys, verdant forests and conical peaks.

Travelling here, tourists must not miss out visiting the region’s most popular tourist destination – Cherrapunjee. A fairytale land full of surprises, it was the world’s wettest place until recently. That title has now been taken over by Mawlynnong, a splendidly beautiful hill town located in the Khasi Hill District. It would be interesting to note that Mawlynnong also holds the status of being the cleanest village in Asia, and is blessed with nature's bounty. The Nohkalikai Falls, just a close distance from the heart of Mawlynnong, is the pride of Meghalaya, and is the tallest plunge waterfall in India. The town is also home to one of the most unique tourist attractions in the world, the Living Root Bridges.

Trained by the Khasi people to grow from the roots of rubber trees, these brilliant masterpieces instantly take you in awe of their sheer magnificence. Amongst all the bridges, the most stunning one is the Umshiang Double-Decker Bridge which is more than 180 years old, and reflects the extraordinary intellectual skills of the local tribesmen.

Apart from these, there are other things that make Khasi Hills Tourism so famous. Of them all, the 'Mawsami Limestone Caves', 'Mawphlang Sacred Forest', 'Nongkhnum Island' and ‘Don Bosco Tribal Museum’ need a special mention.
