One of the most challenging treks in Ladakh, the Junglam Trek can be done from July onwards. The trail of this trek goes through high passes and deep gorges that connect the Zanskar range with the Stok range. You have to cross ten high passes amidst some mind-blowing landscapes including the heavy inflows of Tilat Sumdo. And, that’s the main reason why this trek can happen from July; the level of water in the rivers becomes low enough to cross and access the highest points. The trek starts from Hemis Monastery which is situated nearby Leh. However, it can be also started from Sham or Spituk in Indus Valley; all of these places can be considered the starting points of the Junglam Trek in Markha Valley.
The trail takes the enthusiasts to Lang Thang Chu, hiking up to Zarlung Karpo La, which is elevated at a height of 5,050 metres. Needless to say, you will be mesmerised by the magnificent views of the mountainous landscapes all around you. The central point of the trail is Kharnak Chu and when you will be descending towards it, you will find several alienated places with remote landscapes which are home to abundant wildlife.
After reaching Tilat Sumdo, the trail then starts along the river bed through steep gorges and narrow valleys. Then, you will arrive at Chubchak, an amazing spot for camping. The trail crosses Zalung Karpo La, which is the highest pass of the trek to cover and it makes the journey more effective. After reaching it, you will be mesmerised by watching the magnificent landscapes all around. After reaching this point, the Junglam trekking trail finally takes a descending turn and goes towards Zangla through its hanging valleys; then it reaches Zanskar Valley. This challenging trek attracts some of the most enthusiastic trekkers and it can be best accomplished during the months from July to mid-October.
What makes the trek challenging? To reach the last point of the Junglam trail, one will have to cross the river at various points. Also, there is a consistent change in altitude.
The best time to explore the Junglam trek in Ladakh is between July to September. This is the peak trekking season in Ladakh, as the weather is typically clear and dry, making it ideal for trekking. The temperature is also pleasant during this time, which makes the trek comfortable. It is important to note that the Junglam trek is a high altitude trek and the weather can change rapidly. Even in the best time of the year, it is important to be prepared for extreme weather conditions.
