Trans Urethral Resection of Prostrate (TURP)

Trans urethral resection of prostate (TURP) is a surgical procedure used to treat urinary problems due to an enlarged prostate. It is done by the help of a resectoscope and do not need any incision.

Indication for TURP procedure include troublesome symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). These symptoms can include straining during urination, frequent urination or nocturia, which are failing to respond to medication. TURP is also used to treat or prevent complications due to blocked urine flow.

You will be given general anaesthesia during the TURP procedure. A resectoscope will be passed along your urethra until it reaches your prostate, which contains a light, camera and a loop of wire. The loop of wire will use a controlled electric energy to cut away the section of your prostate that is causing your symptoms.

You will have to stay in the hospital for 1 to 3 days after the procedure. However, complete recovery after TURP procedure might take 1 to 2 weeks and you are not suggested to lift heavy objects for a few more weeks.

Severe complications are rare in the case of TURP procedure, but there are nominal chances of retrograde ejaculation, urinary tract infections, urethral strictures and bleeding.
