Trans Urethral Resection of Bladder Tumor (TURBT):

Trans urethral resection of bladder tumour (TURBT) is the most recommended procedure to diagnose and treatment of bladder tumours. This procedure is used to cut away any tumour growth that may have developed in the bladder.

TURBT allows your doctor to test and see if there are any cancerous growth. If the tumour is in the lining of your bladder and it is not spread down into the surrounding muscle (non-muscle invasive), then TURBT can be an effective treatment.

You will need to follow TURBT preparation recommended by your doctor. You will be asked not to eat or drink anything six hours prior to the procedure.

The TURBT procedure will need a general anaesthesia and some antibiotics combined with heparin. Now, your surgeon will pass a cystoscope along your urethra, then through your bladder. A wire loop is passed along the side of the cystoscope. This loop creates heat, which is used to separate the tumor away from your bladder wall. If any tissue is removed during the TURBT, it will be sent to the laboratory for testing.

TURBT complications can be deep vein thrombosis, infection and perforation.

Complete recovery time of TURBT procedure can be 2 to 3 weeks.
