Proximal urethroplasty:

Proximal urethroplasty is a surgical procedure to repair the urethra for a stricture close to the bladder. This procedure is sometimes performed immediately after severe injury to the urethra.

Your doctor will suggest you not to eat and drink for six hours before proximal urethroplasty. A general anaesthesia will be given to you in the beginning of the proximal urethroplasty procedure. Some intervenes (IV) antibiotics are injected into your arm.

Following that, an incision is made directly over the stricture. Now, the scar tissue may be cut away and the urethra rejoined over a catheter, if the narrowed area is short and if the narrowing is more extensive, the area will be widened with a piece of buccal mucosa over a bladder catheter. Finally, a drain is inserted and a second catheter will be placed in the bladder through your tummy.

The drain will be removed after 48 to 72 hours of the surgery. You will need a hospital stay of 5 to 7 days. Physical activity will be restricted for 2 to 3 weeks and the complete proximal urethroplasty recovery will take about 6 to 8 weeks.
Complications of proximal urethroplasty are swelling and bruising of the wound, recurrent stricture, and injury to the urethra.
