Laser prostatectomy is a minimally invasive procedure to remove a part of prostate gland. This procedure is performed for moderate to severe urinary conditions caused by an enlarged prostate.

There are several different types of laser prostatectomy. The common types are:
– Photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP)
– Holmium laser ablation of the prostate (HoLAP)
– Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP)

During the laser prostatectomy procedure your doctor inserts a scope through the tip of your penis into the urethra (tube that carries urine from your bladder). The prostate surrounds the urethra. Now the laser is passed through the scope to destroy, vaporize or cut out the excess prostate tissue blocking urine flow.

You might go home after the procedure or will be required to stay in the hospital overnight, depending on the method used in the laser prostatectomy. You will be placed a urinary catheter because of swelling that blocks urine flow for a few days. Complete recovery time after laser prostratectomy might take a week or two after the procedure.

Some common side effects of laser prostatectomy includes temporary difficulty in urinating, narrowing of the urethra, dry orgasm, urinary tract infection and erectile dysfunction.
