Bladder neck incision

Bladder neck incision is a surgical procedure conducted to improve the flow of urine and to relieve urinary pressure in the bladder.

Indications for bladder neck incision are same in males and females. Common symptoms can be irregular urination, incomplete bladder emptying, inability to control urination and pelvic pain.

The success rate of bladder neck incision is about 60 percent. Once the procedure is done, the symptoms of bladder neck obstruction typically subside. However, if an incision does not relieve your symptoms, then open surgery may be required.

You will be given a general or spinal anaesthesia before the bladder neck incision procedure. Your surgeon will insert a resectoscope through the urethra. Then a cutting instrument will be attached to the resectoscope to make a small incision in the wall of the bladder neck. After that the obstruction is removed through the resectoscope.

You will need to stay in the hospital for 2 to 3 days. You should avoid lifting and straining for 3 weeks as long as recovery is completed.

Complications associated with a bladder neck incision procedure are pain, infection and bleeding. Damage to the ureter or bladder rarely occurs.
