Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF)
Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion (TLIF) is a surgical procedure performed to fuse the posterior and anterior columns of the spine. The surgery is conducted through a posterior approach. An interbody spacer and a bone graft used during the surgery helps stabilize the anterior portion, whereas the posterior portion is locked with rods and screws in place.
During the TLIF procedure, surgical hardware is installed into the spine to help enhance the fusion rate. Rods and screws are attached to the posterior part at the back of the vertebrae. Then, an interbody fusion is put into the disc space from one side of the spine to the other.
Then, a bone graft is positioned into the interbody space on the back of the vertebrae to help it get fused. The bone graft is extracted from the pelvis area and if needed, bone graft substitutes are used. Once the bone graft heals, it gradually fuses the vertebrae below and above to form a long bone.
