Prosthesis refers to a synthetic or an artificial device which is used in place of the missing original part of the human body. Any body part when lost due to congenital conditions, disease or trauma may need to be amputated. However, it doesn’t mean that the person will go around without that missing body part for the rest of life. Prosthesis helps to replace that missing body part.

A prosthesis is designed according to the functional needs and appearance of that missing part. Then, the prosthesis is assembled in that place. In case a patient needs transradial prosthesis, then he/she has to choose between a myoelectric device, aesthetic functional device and a body-powered device. Depending upon the patient’s economical capabilities and future goals, it has to be determined which type of prosthesis should be selected.

There are different types of prosthesis – ‘Craniofacial Prostheses’ is classified into extra-oral prostheses and intra-oral prostheses. Extra-oral prostheses are further divided into hemifacial, auricular (ear), nasal, orbital and ocular. Intra-oral prostheses include dental prostheses such as dentures, obturators, and dental implants.

Artificial implants used in knee replacement and hip replacement are also a type of prosthesis. The material used foe the prosthesis may vary, depending on the location of the implant.
