Open reduction internal fixation (ORIF)
Open Reduction Internal Fixation (ORIF) is a type of surgical procedure meant to fix very serious bone fracture. The purpose of the surgery is to realign and fix the bone structure into its original position. ORIF also refers to the repair of joint, including the knee and hip joint replacement.
ORIF surgical procedure concerns the musculoskeletal structure of the body. The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. During the surgery, an incision is made at the site of an injury, and then the fracture is minutely re-aligned. In the next step, the hardware is installed and the cut is closed. Remember, the plates can be temporary or permanent, depending upon which area of the bony structure is removed during the surgery and the medical requirements of the patient.
After ORIF surgery, a cast is applied. For instance, in case of ankle fractures, a cast is applied which is light weight and crutches are given to the patient so that he or she is able to walk. Once the healing has progressed, the case is removed and replaced with a heavy-weight cast. After a month, the cast is removed completely.
