Decompression posterior and fusion spine
Decompression posterior and spinal fusion surgery involves adding a bone graft to the spine to help create a biological response for the bone to grow gradually between two vertebral elements and eventually stop the motion at the segment. This type of surgery is done by inserting a cage, which is created out of synthetic material or allograft bone into the disc space. Since the surgery is done from the back, it is known as decompression posterior spinal fusion surgery.
During the decompression posterior spinal fusion surgery, a three to six inches cut is made in the midline of the back and also in the right and left lower back muscles. Once the doctor gets access to the spine, he or she removes the lamina so that the nerve root can be viewed properly.
Now, the facet joint that are over the nerve roots are trimmed to allow more space for them. Once the nerve roots are retracted to a side, the disc space is placed. Then, a cage of lumbar interbody bone graft is placed into the disc space. This enables the bone to grow from one vertebral body to another vertebral body.
