Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Reconstruction
This type of surgery is performed to repair or reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament. During the ACL procedure, a graft is used to replace the damaged ligament. In this surgery, autografts are most commonly used. These are taken from a part of the patient’s body, such as the tendon of the kneecap. Another most preferable choice is allograft tissue, which is retrieved from a deceased donor.
Avulsion fracture cases are treated with repair surgery, in which a bone fragment is attached to the ACL that is reattached to the bone. Doctors prefer to use open surgery in place of arthroscopic surgery for ACL injuries. This type of surgery is preferred because doctors find it easy to see and operate on the knee structures. It involves smaller incisions for the surgery and is associated with fewer risks.
As for the ACL reconstruction surgery, the doctor first makes a couple of incisions in the knee. Through one incision, the surgeon tries to wash blood from the area followed by the insertion of an arthroscope through the incision so that the camera fitted at the end of the arthroscope can help view the knee structure. Then surgical drills are inserted to create holes in the lower and upper leg bones, through which a graft is anchored.
