Ankle Arthodesis
Patients suffering from ankle arthritis should undergo ankle arthrodesis procedure. This procedure is described as ankle fusion which aims at relieving the pain and maintaining proper functioning of the ankle. Ankle arthritis is defined as the degeneration of the portion of the cartilage that covers the end area of the bones that actually form the ankle joint.
The most common ankle arthritis symptom includes excruciating pain in the ankle area. The pain can be reduced with the use of painkillers, limitation or modification of activity, injection of steroids used in the ankle joints and the use of speciality braces to stabilize ankle and limit movement, specially contoured and cushioned shoes.
During the ankle arthrodesis surgery, patients are sedated so that they do not feel any pain during the procedure. Incisions are made in and around the ankle area to have an access to the ankle joint.
If there is any cartilage in the joint, it is removed to ensure contact between the two bony surfaces. A metal hardware is used to hold the ankle in functional position. Gradually, the bone heals, allowing the patient to move.
